Winterhawks hold off Spokane, 4-3

Reece Newkirk’s third goal of the season was the eventual game-winner as the Portland Winterhawks beat the Spokane Chiefs 4-3 on Sunday in Kent.

Newkirk’s short-handed goal gave Portland a 4-1 lead with 12:15 left in the game.

Spokane scored twice in a two-minute stretch to pull within 4-3 with 5:23 remaining, but Portland held on to improve to 2-0-1.

Nick Cicek, Simon Knak and Gabe Klassen powered Portland to a 3-0 lead.

Portland swept two games this weekend held at the ShoWare Center. The Winterhawks will play their first games this season at Veterans Memorial Coliseum when they host Everett on Friday.
