PORTLAND – Two people were killed in a crash on Interstate 84 in Portland on Thursday morning after multiple reports of a driver going the wrong way on the freeway.

The eastbound lanes of I-84 were closed at Northeast 68th Avenue and traffic was diverted onto surface streets for hours for the investigation. The Portland Police Bureau said the freeway reopened shortly before 11 a.m.

Officers responded to reports of a driver heading west in the eastbound lanes around 2:15 a.m., police said in a statement. Soon after, reports began to come in about a head-on collision on the freeway near Interstate 205 in Northeast Portland.

The first officers on the scene found that two vehicles had collided and two people were killed in the crash.

According to Portland police, the two women killed in the crash were both drivers of the vehicles involved. Neither vehicle had passengers. Their identities are not being released pending family notification.

Police are still trying to determine where the wrong-way driver got on the freeway.

Police are asking anyone who saw a vehicle getting on I-84 westbound in the eastbound lanes to contact the Portland Police Traffic Division at 503-823-2103.
