Letter: Shooting leads to questions

Once again an American has killed several other Americans with a military assault-type weapon and it begs two questions: 1) The mental state of the shooter notwithstanding, why are such weapons available in the first place? 2) If the Founding Fathers had known the deadliness of such weapons in 1789 would they have been so ready to pass the Second Amendment? I think not.
