Vancouver council supportive of plan to transform ‘eyesore’ property along I-5 Bridge

The city of Vancouver and real estate company Kirkland Development are hammering out the details of a proposed public boardwalk and mixed-use development on a plot of land directly east of the Interstate 5 Bridge — the 2.3-acre plot currently occupied by longtime local restaurants Who Song & Larry’s and Joe’s Crab Shack.

“This is really the gateway not only to the city of Vancouver, but to the state of Washington,” Vancouver City Councilor Bart Hansen said during a workshop on the project Monday afternoon.

Dazzling sky show over Pacific Northwest was SpaceX rocket booster falling out of orbit

A SpaceX rocket booster falling out of orbit made for a spectacular display over much of the Pacific Northwest on Thursday night, prompting calls to authorities and excited posts to social media.

A second stage from a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket had failed to make its deorbit burn earlier this month and burned up in the atmosphere at about 9 p.m., according to reports.

Judge fines Clark County $40,000 for withholding documents in Benton lawsuit

A Clark County Superior Court judge has levied a $40,000 fine against the county after ruling that it withheld documents in an ongoing lawsuit pursued by Don Benton, a former Republican state senator and county official.

Following a motion by plaintiffs, Judge Gregory Gonzales ruled on March 11, in addition to the fine, that the county must provide him with a private screening of all of the documents by March 17. The county then produced roughly 1,700 pages of documents, following earlier disclosures before the motion.

Melnick: Make anyone 16 and older eligible for COVID-19 vaccine

On Wednesday evening, Washington formalized a directive from President Joe Biden to make all adults eligible for the COVID-19 vaccine by May 1, but Clark County’s top health official thinks the state should discuss accelerating that timeline.

At Wednesday morning’s Clark County Board of Health meeting, hours before the state’s May 1 announcement, Clark County Public Health Officer Dr. Alan Melnick said he hopes to speak soon with other county health officers, and state officials, about making anyone 16 and older eligible for vaccination ahead of May 1.

Construction begins on high-end homes along Vancouver waterfront

There aren’t many raw pieces of undeveloped land near Vancouver’s waterfront, and one of the last, near Beaches Restaurant, is set to become 15 modern-contemporary, high-end town homes.

Romano Capital Inc. is building the three-story town homes at 1770 S.E. Columbia River Drive. Each is about 2,500 square feet with a two-car garage on the bottom floor.
