We need to do more to bring our students back to school full-time. Evergreen school district is the only district out of nine (Battle Ground, Camas, Hockinson, La Center, Ridgefield, Vancouver, Washougal, Woodland) not returning to four or five days in-person. With distance, guidelines changed to 3 feet, and all teachers offered vaccines, we need to start prioritizing children.
Most other districts, states, and countries prioritized education during COVID-19. In contrast, our children have missed more than a year of in-person teaching, and mental health issues are skyrocketing.
In Governor Inslee’s Emergency Proclamation 21.05, he stated that “school closures have been stressful for many, but it is feared that the lack of in-person learning and other school-based supports may result in gaps in students’ learning and development that may last a lifetime.”
Despite this, and that student absences have risen drastically, Evergreen schools continue to be on a hybrid schedule.
