Prep roundup: Evergreen’s big rally nips Kelso 59-58

Plainsmen trailed by 18 points in third quarter

Trailing by 18 points in the third quarter, the Evergreen boys basketball team rallied to beat Kelso 59-58 on Thursday.

The comeback was led by Evergreen’s defense. Kelso was held to three points in the fourth quarter.

“Our full court press changed the game,” Evergreen coach Brett Henry said.

Jaden Stanley led Evergreen with 21 points, including two free throws that gave the Plainsmen a 58-56 lead with two minutes to play. It was Evergreen’s first lead of the game.

Freshman Lenin Fierro scored 13 points off the bench, including a free throw in the final two minutes that ended up being the game-winner.

Peyton Albers scored 17 points for Evergreen, which improved to 3-3 in the 4A/3A Greater St. Helens League.

Michael Foust scored 26 points to lead visiting Kelso (2-5).

FORT VANCOUVER 52, HUDSON’S BAY 44 — The short-handed Trappers earned a non-league win despite only six players getting onto the floor.

Keyontae Cage and Dean Cadena each scored 12 points for Fort (2-1), which was without star guard Khalil Singleton for a second straight game due to an ankle injury.

Tre Cannon added 11 points for the Trappers.

Hudson’s Bay (1-1) fell behind 18-9 in the first quarter and never caught up. The Eagles’ Isaiah David had a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds.

UNION 91, MOUNTAIN VIEW 43 — Kaden Horn scored 20 points and Izaiah Vongnath had 19 as the Titans remained undefeated in the 4A/3A GSHL.

Vongnath have five 3-pointers and Bryson Metz added 12 points as Union (8-0) shut down the Thunder.

Austin Lee led Mountain View in scoring with 14 points.

R.A. LONG 61, COLUMBIA RIVER 35 — Calvin Holen scored 17 points, Aaron Ofstun added 14 points and the Lumberjacks earned a non-league win on the road.

R.A. Long (2-0) made 11 3-pointers.

Nico Valdez scored nine points for Columbia River (0-2).

Girls basketball

SKYVIEW 62, KELSO 46 — Maddie Hendricks scored 11 of her game-high 26 points in the first quarter where the Storm shut out visiting Kelso 20-0 on their way to the 4A/3A GSHL victory.

Hendricks added 13 rebounds and eight steals. Teammate Avery Wilson had 12 points and 11 steals.

Kelso was led in scoring by Evermore Kaiser with 15 points.

CAMAS 67, PRAIRIE 40 — Faith Bergstrom scored 18 points, Ava Smith added 15 and the Papermakers rolled to a 4A/3A GSHL road win.

Reagan Jamison and Anna Mooney each scored 10 points and hit two 3-pointers for Camas, which stayed unbeaten at 7-0.

Claire Heitschmidt had 13 points and Hannah Clouse added 10 for Prairie (5-3).

UNION 60, MOUNTAIN VIEW 27 — Lolo Weatherspoon scored 20 points, Abbey Kaip added 17 and the Titans improved to 7-1 in the 4A/3A GSHL.

Ariel Ammentorp chipped in nine points for Union, which led 32-21 at halftime before allowing just six second-half points.

CASTLE ROCK 55, SETON CATHOLIC 48 — Payton Kessler scored 16 points and Brooke Wirkkala added 15 for the Rockets, who rode a strong second half to a Trico League road win.

Castle Rock (1-3) outscored the Cougars 38-26 in the second half.

Maddie Willis scored 17 points and Hannah Jo Hammerstom added 12 points for Seton Catholic (1-2).

Stars of the day

  • Rileigh Chinn, Columbia River bowling, rolled a 589 series with a high game of 234, the best in River’s match against Ridgefield.
  • Brock Blakley, Skyview baseball, went 2 for 4 with three RBI and a double in a 13-3 win over Heritage as the Storm improved to 8-0.
