A Portland police officer fired a gun at a car-theft suspect early Saturday, authorities say.

Officers responded to a call reporting a stolen vehicle near Northeast 158th Avenue and Mason Street about 12:30 a.m., according to Portland police. They stopped a white Ford pickup truck they thought might be the stolen vehicle at Northeast 33rd Drive and Sunderland Avenue, police said.

“The officers got out of their vehicle to investigate, and the suspect drove in the direction of the officers,” police said in a statement. One officer fired at the truck, hitting the driver.

Police ended up chasing the driver south on Interstate 205 and then east on Interstate 84. Police put down spike strips, flattening at least one of the truck’s tires, and the driver crashed in Wood Village about 1 a.m.

The driver — a man who has not been publicly identified — was arrested and taken to a hospital with “non-life threatening gunshot injuries,” according to police.

The truck he was driving turned out not to be the same vehicle that prompted the initial police response, but it had also been reported stolen, police said.

No officers were hurt. The involved officer has been put on paid administrative leave, which is standard practice after police shootings. Police said they will release the officer’s name today.
