Compared to the previous matchup with its rival. Thursday’s 0-0 tie with Camas must have felt like a win to the Union boys soccer team.

But it still felt like a tie to the Titans.

Union flipped the switch on Camas in the second half, earning the bulk of the serious second-half challenges, including a shot that went off the post.

But the match ended as a scoreless draw, three weeks after the Papermakers routed Union 5-0.

“I think we solved some of the issues Camas exposes teams with,” Union coach Jason Moore said. “We saw a couple of things at halftime and talked about it. And I’d say the guys work those things almost to perfection in the second half. They really put everything on the line, especially after playing Mountain View last night, which is not an easy game.”

Union goalkeeper Rory McDonald made three big saves in the first half to keep the game scoreless. In the second half, it was Camas goalkeeper Jake Bilsborough who had to make the big saves to keep the Papermakers’ unbeaten on the season.

“I’m really happy with the outcome, but I’d like to play Camas with fresh legs,” Moore said.

The Titans likely will get that chance next week in the final week of tiered play in the 4A/3A Greater St. Helens League.

“It would be nice if both of us could come into a ‘league final’ with fresh legs,” Moore said. “I hope the athletic directors will do that for us because I think it’s what this rivalry warrants.”
