Clark County needs a directly elected chair, and Charter Amendment 3 should be defeated. Shrinking the size of the districts to increase representation is laudable, but should not happen by eliminating the directly elected chair. Elected at-large, the chair has the perspective to see district council member demands in context and seek more complete solutions. Also, the chair is empowered to set the tone of the council and guide it through deliberations. Clark County’s 512,000 residents would benefit from more representatives on the council, but not by eliminating the directly elected chair. I urge a “No” vote on Charter Amendment 3.
