Weather Eye: Vancouver’s perfectly wet November continues

A big thank you to all of our veterans out there today. This is your day to be recognized for your faithful service to our country. I wish the weather was going to be better for you, but it will be rainy and blustery. We may even throw in a few scattered thunderstorms.

When I wrote this week’s Tuesday column on Monday afternoon, we had no rainfall measured and there were wishful hopes for a dry day. But needless to say, the rain began a few hours later in earnest, and another soaking was in the books.

Wednesday had been rainless all day as of 4 p.m., but once again, rain was moving in from the south and was falling steadily during the evening hours. So, we continue our string of wet days every day this month.

The next dry day could be Saturday, but rain may fall before midnight, keeping our wet weather in the record books.

The Pineapple Express is upon the Northwest through Friday, with half a foot of rain in the mountains and along the coast. The wetter locations in the Coast Range and near Mount St. Helens could receive nearly a foot of rain, so flood watches have been issued. Locally, I expect a couple inches of rain by Saturday morning and double that at least in our nearby foothills.

I’ll be sharing last month’s rainfall tallies from your friends and neighbors with you soon. I’ll try to pass along a few more winter-weather forecasts as well in Sunday’s column.

So far this month here in Vancouver, as of early evening Wednesday, we had 2 inches in the rain gage.

Unfortunately, all that pretty snow that fell a few days ago has nearly washed away by now and will add to the streamflows coming off the Cascades. From white back to green.

The good news is that after we are finished with the warmer Pineapple rains, colder air arrives from the Gulf of Alaska and drops the snow level below the passes next week, adding some snow to the ski areas. We’ll wait and see if the snow keeps falling later next week.

Chat with you all on Sunday.
