Prep highlights: Camas volleyball going to state; Union’s Chang 4th in 50 free at state swimming

Camas earned a bid to the Class 4A state volleyball tournament by defeating Skyview on Saturday in the bi-district tournament.

In a matchup between the two 4A Greater St. Helens League teams, the Papermakers rebounded from an opening-set loss to top the Storm, 9-25, 25-19, 27-25, 25-19 at Curtis Junior High School in University Place.

Camas went on to defeat Mount Rainier 3-2 in the fifth-place game. Both teams had already clinched a state berth at next weekend’s state tournament in Yakima heading into the match.

Skyview finished the bi-district tournament in seventh place after picking up a 3-1 win over Puyallup.

3A BI-DISTRICT — Kelso regrouped from a loss in the semifinals to finish in third place at Olympia.

Already with a spot in next week’s Class 3A state tournament locked up, Kelso dropped its semifinal matchup to Peninsula 25-16, 23-25, 25-21, 26-24. In the third-place match, the Hilanders topped North Thurston 25-14, 25-19, 25-27, 25-13.

Bella Hadaller had a combined 54 kills across the two matches, while Natalie Fraley chipped in 21 kills. Rielee Gourde collected a team-high 35 digs for the day, while Emily Thompson had 92 assists.

1A STATE — King’s Way Christian, La Center and Castle Rock saw their seasons come to an end at Class 1A state tournament at Yakima.

In the seventh-place bracket on Saturday, King’s Way fell 3-0 to eventual seventh-place finisher Charles Wright, which went on to defeat Seattle Academy 3-1.

La Center, which opened the tournament with a 3-0 loss to Zillah, was bounced from the bracket Friday with a 28-26, 25-20, 11-25, 15-25, 15-13 loss to Seattle Academy.

Castle Rock fell 3-0 to Lakeside of Nine Mile Falls on Saturday.

4A STATE — Highlighted by a fourth-place finish in the 50-yard freestyle finals, Union’s Annette Chang earned four top-eight finishes — two individual, two relays — at King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way.

Chang clocked a time of 24.36 seconds in the 50 free and placed seventh in the 100 free (53.81).

Union placed sixth in the 200 medley relay, as the team of Chang, Jean Lin, Joli Fong and Nicole Adams finished in 1:53.01. Fong and Chang teamed up with Ariel Ammentorp and Joanne Lin to place eighth in the 200 free relay.

In the 100 breaststroke, Campell Deringer of Camas took fifth place with a time of 1:06.32.

2A STATE — Columbia River’s Jane Tewinkel had a pair of top-eight finishes in the finals, also held at King County Aquatic Center.

Tewinkel took sixth place in the 100 backstroke by clocking a 1:03.28, while adding a seventh-place effort in the 100 butterfly (1:04.54).
