Letter: Mask mandate is ignored

By Peter Young, Vancouver
Published: November 14, 2021, 6:00am

I was recently in the Safeway on Main Street in Vancouver and noticed a cashier not wearing a mask. I asked if he was going to put one on before I went through his line. He said he was not. I went through another line where the masked cashier told me the young man was refusing to wear a mask and that the manager cannot enforce him wearing one. Safeway is in clear violation of state order 20-03 which requires face masks for everyone over 5 years of age in most public indoor settings regardless of vaccination status.

On a single day in Clark County last week, there were 145 newly reported COVID-19 cases and five newly reported COVID-19 deaths. A pandemic is still going on.

I think many of The Columbian’s readers should know about Safeway’s failure to abide by the law so they can make an informed decision about whether to shop there.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
