Letter: Show compassion for racism impact

By Agnes Paul, Vancouver

Roy Schimelpfenig’s letters are filled with hate and misinformation.

To clarify one issue that he brings up: Democrats do not have a “race card.” The U.S. has a long history of racism that has exacted a horrible toll on our fellow human beings.

The image of my parents, standing together in their grief after my sister died in a car accident is forever etched in my brain. Can you imagine the level of sorrow if she had died from a gunshot while jogging? One of my friends experienced racism all of her life, yet had the courage and resolve to create a loving, rich life for herself and family. Four years ago she died of breast cancer, and I am recovering from that loss. I am 99 percent certain it would have destroyed me if she had died from a cop’s knee on her neck.

Please have compassion and empathy for the families who have had to bear excruciating losses.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
