Letter: Herrera Beutler avoids real crisis

I was disappointed to read about Congresswoman Jaime Herrera Beutler’s recent trip to the Mexican border, because it was apparent she made this trip for political purposes to pander to the right-wing nativist base of the Republican Party, not to actually learn about the humanitarian crisis that is happening all along this border and most recently in Del Rio, Texas.

Her visit for her photo-op was made to McAllen, Texas, so that she could pose next to Trump’s border wall and show that her main interest was in preventing the supposed vast quantities of illicit drugs being smuggled by illegal immigrants in unwalled portions of the border. It’s too bad she didn’t see the real crisis and the thousands of desperate people there.
