Prep highlights: Columbia River’s Barna impresses with 4th place finish at Curtis Invitational

Columbia River’s Daniel Barna placed fourth in the top division varsity race at the Curtis Invitational cross country event on Saturday at Chambers Bay in University Place.

Barna was the top Washington finisher behind three Jesuit (Ore.) runners. His time was 15 minutes, 43.1 seconds on the 5,000-meter course. There were 109 finishers.

Jesuit went 1-2-3 led by overall winner junior Jacob Nenow in 15:24.8.

Columbia River was seventh out of 14 teams with 203 points.

Jesuit swept the boys and girls races by a wide margin.

The La Center girls were sixth in the division 1 race with top placer Lauren Fox finishing 14th out of 86 in 19:25.5.

Columbia River junior Hanna Bailey finished second out of 153 competitors in the division 2 girls race. Her time was 19:41.1. Freshman Natalie Oathout of Klahowya won in 19:30.8.

In the division 2 boys race, Mountain View’s Branden Chou was 10th overall out of 203 runners with a time of 17:10.4.

Stars of the day

  • Sydney Stimmel and Andie Buckley, Columbia River girls soccer. Stimmel scored two goals and Buckley assisted on all four as the Rapids beat Hockinson 4-0 to move into first place in the 2A Greater St. Helens League at 5-1.
  • Ella Schoene, La Center volleyball, finished with 51 kills and 33 digs over four matches at the Lumberjack Invitational at R.A. Long as the Wildcats placed third.
  • Timothy Bradshaw, Cedar Tree Classical Christian boys cross country, won the Harvest Classic 5,000-meter run at Longview with a time of 16:48.9.
