BELLINGHAM — U.S. Customs and Border Protection Border Patrol agents stopped two attempted illegal border crossings from Canada into Whatcom County last month, resulting in four people being arrested.

The first incident occurred early Sept. 25 in the Sumas area, Customs and Border Protection spokesperson Jason Givens told The Bellingham Herald in an email. One person was arrested.

Chief Patrol Agent David S. BeMiller said in an Sept. 27 tweet that the person who was arrested “illegally crossed the border and fled at a high rate of speed.” The car ultimately crashed, BeMiller wrote, and the person was then arrested.

The second incident occurred three days later on Sept. 28, Givens told The Herald. Three people were arrested in that incident.

“Border secured! Another illegal drive through across our border stopped by Blaine Agents last night! Subjects arrested and vehicle seized,” BeMiller wrote.

No more information about either crossing was released.

The Border Patrol reports that its Blaine Sector had 227 encounters during Fiscal Year 2020 (Oct. 1 through Sept. 30), which was less than half the 524 apprehensions it had during Fiscal Year 2019. That decrease was consistent with what the Border Patrol saw nationwide last year.
