Prep highlights: Seton Catholic’s Leone wins elite division race at Lacey

Sophomore Alexis Leone of Seton Catholic won the Teal Elite Division at the Bill Kehoe South Sound Invitational held Saturday at St. Martin’s University in Lacey.

Leone turned in a time of 18 minutes, 10.1 seconds on the 5,000-meter course to win by 7.2 seconds over second-place Hannah Lee of Peninsula. There were 95 runners in this division.

Seton Catholic senior Lara Carrion wasn’t far behind as she placed third in 18:37.4, and the Cougars finished second as a team with 83 points. Central Kitsap won with 68.

Also, senior Suzie Johnson of Cedar Tree Classical Christian in Battle Ground was first out of 110 finishers in the Silver Division with a time of 19:13.2.

Stars of the day

  • Daniel Barna, Columbia River boys cross country, turned in a personal best for 5,000 meters with a 15:31.3 to place 14th overall out of 134 runners in the Elite Division at the Nike Hole in the Wall Invitational at Lakewood.
  • Gracie Buzzell, Camas girls cross country, was second overall in the Gold Division out of 227 runners in 18:15.5, and the Papermakers finished second out of 31 teams in the division at the Nike Hole in the Wall Invitational at Lakewood.
  • Branden Chou, Mountain View boys cross country, was second overall out of 187 finishers in the Silver Division at the South Sound Invitational with a time of 16:40.0 over 5,000 meters.
  • Athiena Ghormley, Fort Vancouver girls cross country, was third overall out of 98 finishers in the Bronze Division of the South Sound Invitational with a time of 21:39.9 as the Trappers won the team title out of 11 in the division.
  • Campbell Deringer, Camas girls swimming, won the 200 individual medley, 100 breaststroke, and was on the winning 200 medley relay team as the Papermakers won the Kelso Invitational.
  • Annette Chang, Union girls swimming, won the 50 freestyle, 100 free and was on the winning 200 free relay as the Titans finished second at the Kelso Invitational.
