Letter: Focus on needs of the many

To those ignorant and uninformed who claim violations of their Constitutional rights regarding mandatory vaccination, I would offer the following in hopes that they don’t waste money on a court action in which they will not prevail.

Jacobson v. Massachusetts, 197 U.S. 11 (1905), was a U.S. Supreme Court case in which the Court upheld the authority of states to enforce compulsory vaccination laws. The court’s decision articulated the view that individual liberty is not absolute and is subject to the police power of the state. If you actually read the decision you will find that the logic was simply that the safety and good of the masses greatly outweigh the wishes of the few. For Star Trek fans, it preceded the old 1982 Star Trek Spock statement that “The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few.”

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
