PORTLAND — Police officers saturated an area of Portland Sunday night known for street racing and stopped dozens of would-be racers from congregating, authorities said.
The Portland Police Bureau said in a news release on Monday that with Oregon State Police, police made 47 traffic stops, issued 21 citations and arrested two people.
Police said during their encounters they explained the new unlawful street takeover law.
A man in a Subaru WRX STI with license plates from Olympia tried to elude police and the bureau said the vehicle was going over 100 mph when the driver apparently saw spike strips in the road and backed up quickly into a police car.
Police said the 24-year-old driver was arrested on several charges including felony eluding. No injuries were reported. Another person was arrested on an outstanding warrant, police said.
“Street racing is illegal, dangerous and harms our community,” Chief Chuck Lovell said in the news release. “I am pleased no one was harmed last night when the suspect crashed into a police vehicle.”
