Police shot and killed an assault suspect after a pursuit in the Orchards area early Sunday, according to the Clark County Sheriff’s Office.

At about 2:20 a.m., deputies tried to stop a car associated with someone they had probable cause to arrest for first-degree assault with a handgun, according to a sheriff’s office press release. The person wouldn’t pull over, so the deputies gave chase, the release states. Deputies used their cars to block the suspect near Northeast 122nd Avenue and Northeast 49th Street, the release states.

The suspect got out of the car but was armed with a handgun and wouldn’t obey orders to put it down, so police shot him, according to the sheriff’s office.

Deputies found the suspect a short distance away, dead and with a handgun, according to the sheriff’s office. Northeast 49th Street between 112th and 121st avenues remained closed as of 10 a.m.

The Southwest Washington Regional Independent Investigation Team is investigating.

Involved deputies were placed on critical incident leave following standard protocol.
