Prep highlights: Columbia River’s Rudi wins 2A bi-district title

Columbia River senior Matt Rudi won the 2A bi-district boys tennis title Thursday by defeating Justin Chung of W.F. West 7-5, 6-2 at Steamboat Tennis Center in Olympia.

Joining him at the state tournament in May will be Fort Vancouver’s Jeffrey Trong. He placed third with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Javy Han of W.F. West.

Ridgefield’s doubles team of Mikey Nester and Ryan Gruber lost in the championship match to Joseph Chung and Aaron Boggess of W.F. West, 6-3, 7-5. Both doubles teams will advance to state.

Also statebound is Washougal’s Gavin Kester and Tucker Kneipp. They beat Columbia River’s Cole Benner and Alex Harris 6-1, 6-0 in the third-place semifinal, and then beat Landon Kaut and Brandon Yeung of Centralia 6-2, 6-2 for third and a state berth.

The 2A state tournament is scheduled for May 27-28 at Nordstrom Tennis Center in Seattle.

2A SOCCER: Washougal 5, Shelton 0 — Jaden Leonard had two goals and Jamie Maas added two goals and an assist as the Washougal girls soccer team beat Shelton 5-0 Thursday to win a play-in game for the 2A district playoffs.

The Panthers advance to play Columbia River at 5 p.m. Saturday in a first-round match.

Lauren Rabus added two assists and Makenzi Gehrke had three saves in goal.

Stars of the day

  • Shaela Bradley, La Center girls soccer, had two goals and one assist as the Wildcats beat Elma 5-1 in a non-league match.
  • Emily Vossenkuhl, Ridgefield volleyball, led the Spudders with 13 kills and nine blocks in a tight three-set 2A GSHL win at Mark Morris.
  • Halle Reiter, Camas volleyball, had 13 acres and six digs for Camas in a 3-0 win over Heritage.
  • Drew Eggleston, Union volleyball, had 17 digs and 7 kills for Union in a 3-0 win over Mountain View.
  • Sophie Worden, Columbia River volleyball, had 18 assists, one kills and four digs for River in a 3-0 win over Hudson’s Bay.
  • Ella Schoene, La Center volleyball, had 10 kills, four aces and nine digs in a non-league win over Elma.
