Union No. 2 in Class 4A in Associated Press preseason prep football poll

Hockinson No. 5 at 2A; Kalama shares top spot at 2B

Friday’s season-opening matchup between Union and O’Dea of Seattle at McKenzie Stadium will be a showdown of two top-ranked high school football teams in the state.

Union came in tied for No. 2 in the 4A rankings in the Associated Press preseason prep football rankings released Wednesday. The rankings are based on votes by media members across the state.

Graham-Kapowsin came No. 1 in Class 4A, garnering five first-place votes and 74 points. Union was tied with Lake Stevens at No. 2 with 65 points. Lake Stevens received two first-place votes, while Union did not receive any. Gonzaga Prep received one first-place vote and came in  fourth with 55 points. No other Southwest Washington team was in the top 10, although Skyview was listed as one of the teams receiving votes.

O’Dea garnered all eight first-place votes in Class 3A. The Irish will face Union at 4:30 p.m. Friday to kick off the prep football season in Southwest Washington. After O’Dea’s 80 points, Seattle Prep was No. 2 with 58 points and Spanaway Lake No. 3 with 55. No Southwest Washington team was ranked in the top 10.

Tumwater was the unanimous pick for No. 1 in Class 2A, receiving eight first-place votes and 80 points. Lynden was No. 2 with 63 points. Hockinson was the lone Southwest Washington team in the top 10, coming in at No. 5. Hockinson will open the season with a game Friday at Lynden.

Perennial power Royal took all eight first-place votes in Class 1A with 80 points. Eatonville was No. 2 with 68 points. La Center was the lone Southwest Washington entry in the top 10, coming in at No. 9.

There was a jumble of Southwest Washington teams atop the 2B rankings, with Kalama and Onalaska sharing the top spot with 63 points out of a possible 70. Kalama received two first-place votes and Onalaska received three. Napavine received two first-place votes and finished just behind the other two schools with 62 points to be ranked No. 3. Toledo came in at No. 8.
