Letter: Protect democracy from Texas

By Betty Montgomery, Vancouver
Published: September 10, 2021, 6:00am

I am extremely concerned with last week’s Supreme Court decision allowing Texas’ devastating legislation to proceed. Arming citizens and paying them to enforce a curtailment of constitutional rights against other citizens is just hideous.

Sens. Maria Cantwell and Patty Murray and Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler: Please do your utmost to see that the For the People Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Act get passed into law. Without these protections, we will see state legislatures become less and less likely to actually represent their constituents.

I cannot imagine anything other than global warming that merits your attention more than protecting our very vulnerable democracy.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
