Letter: Time to leave Afghanistan was now

In response to Martin Noll’s letter “Demand Biden’s resignation” (Our Readers’ Views, Sept. 5): Where does the evidence start in ending a 20-year war in Afghanistan? How about the Trump administration not including the sitting Afghan government in peace negotiations with the Taliban? That would be a major problem for a peaceful transfer of power sharing for the country of Afghanistan. Or how about after Osama bin Laden was killed? That was one of the main reasons for the invasion, to kill the culprit of 9/11.

There is a saying in the military called the “Fog of War,” meaning the uncertainty of situations: look at the end of the Vietnam War. The Trump administration peace agreement reduced service members killed by the Taliban with the agreement that U.S. armed forces would leave. How many more American service personnel should we sacrifice? I say the 11 Marines, one Navy corpsman, and one Army soldier is enough. The U.S. had responded appropriately to the 9/11 attacks on America. Plus the saying “Never fight a land war in Asia” rings true; just ask Alexander the Great, the British, the Russians, and America.
