Payton Roth rushed for 146 yards and a touchdown, and the Jesuit defense shut down Camas’ drives before sealing the deal with a late interception, lifting the Crusaders to a 20-10 non-league over the Papermakers on Friday.
“I really love this team and these kids and the fight they have in them,” Camas’ interim coach Jack Hathaway said.
The Papermakers were able to move the ball at times, converting on third or fourth down seven times. Camas was unable to turn those drives into points.
A 22-yard run touchdown run by Roth and Jacob Hutchinson’s 55-yard touchdown pass to Tyree Blake gave the Crusaders a 13-3 halftime lead.
Jairus Phillips’ two-yard touchdown run in the third quarter got Camas within 13-10.
Camas was facing a fourth down on the Jesuit 42 with 2:35 to play when the Crusaders tipped a pass, and Blake returned it 60 yards for the clinching touchdown.
Jon Schultz rushed for 126 yards for Camas, and Taylor Iaone pass for 115 yards.
The loss dropped Camas to 0-3 on the season. The Papermakers travel to play another Oregon power West Linn next week.
“Coaching staff and players really just need to dial in for next week and we need to stop making those mistakes at inopportune times,” Hathaway said. “We just need to get in the right spot, and we’ll be better and keep getting better as the season goes on.”
