Letter: Read, learn from letters

Monthly, Roy Schimelpfenig offers a Columbian letter with his radical Christian nationalist perspective on the state of things. As he sees it our nation has lost its way and we need to get right with “God,” Christian biblical dogma (his reading of it), patriotism (his way) and Donald Trump’s wisdom. Mr. Schimelpfenig writes well and given free speech it’s his to say. From contrary Columbian letters, however, it is clear there are those who take strong issue with both the tone and the content of how Mr. Schimelpfenig sees things. I count myself among them. He makes wild assertions and too often these don’t comport with the facts.

Still, I appreciate Mr. Schimelpfenig keeping us up to date. I listen carefully, better understanding an opponent’s thinking is vitally important. In our divided nation as policy and practice are debated and move along we need to pay careful attention. Ideas like ones Mr. Schimelpfenig promotes can radically change, and even potentially destroy, American democracy as we presently know and practice it.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
