With the stroke of a pen, Washington became the 16th state in the nation to allow candidates to use campaign funds to cover child care costs.

Senate Bill 5855, sponsored by state Sen. Liz Lovelett, D-Anacortes, was signed into law by Gov. Jay Inslee on March 24. Supporters say the new law removes a significant obstacle candidates face when running for office.

Vote Mama Foundation founder Liuba Grechen Shirley said in a statement Monday that the new law will empower more working parents and caregivers to run for office.

Without having to worry about paying for child care, Shirley said candidates who understand the issues facing working families will be able to represent those families in office.

The new law goes into effect July 9.
