Letter: Comfort, convenience are false gods

Bob Clary (“Leaf blowers are necessary,” Our Readers Views, April 2) acknowledges that “None of this (yard care) equipment is good for the universe,” but he gives it a pass because “you have to take care of the neighbor’s leaves, right?” To which I respond with a simple “No.” At least, not that way.

The road to environmental hell is paved with the spewings and carcasses of dead machines. Have we lost the ability to differentiate between the necessary and the convenient? There are other options. Yes, batteries too pose an environmental quandary. They are not the perfect option, but they are a better choice, until something better comes along. Hand tools, even better. Comfort and convenience are the false gods of the consumers we have been trained to be. Our children and grandchildren need us to do better.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
