Letter: Defend against kakistocracy

Just read a story in the Seattle Times that Joe Kent, who is running for Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler’s seat, has some very specific Day One priorities: “Impeach Joe Biden. Impeach Kamala Harris. Maybe install Donald Trump — or one of his children — as Speaker of the House.” He then admitted “the odds of his plan succeeding are slim. But obstruction and revenge are the point: ‘In a lot of ways the process is the punishment,’ he said. ‘That’s what they did with Trump. We’ll do it to them.’ ” (“In Southwest WA, a far-right clash tests power of Trump’s endorsement in race for Congress,” The Seattle Times, April 11.)

We don’t need this buffoon in Congress. We don’t need more obstruction and revenge. I think we do need to bring back the term kakistocracy: “a government run by the worst, least qualified, or most unscrupulous citizens.” I think this term can be fairly applied to any government that would be set up by the MAGA-Trump wing of the Republican Party.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
