Letter: Trump must face justice

The recent batch of opinion pieces saying that we should cheer on a Trump pardon is floating an idea underpinned by Trump himself. When you want a particular thing to happen you work to make public any part of it that will make you think it is only logical, it’s only fair. We have a strong sense of fair in this country.

Here’s the thing: it is not logical. It is not fair. Part of how we got to where we are today is that Nixon was given a pardon. Part of why we are here is because we did not convict Trump earlier when it was clearly shown that Trump is a criminal. If we believe in the rule of law we really have no choice but to try Trump for any of the multiple crimes he has allegedly committed. This applies both during and after he was president.

The committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, riot has shown us enough to know that there is far more to unpack in a courtroom. Justice is an integral part of our core governing philosophy. The three branches of government require that we pursue the criminality to logical conclusion. Whatever that comes to in court. He has already been given enough consideration.
