Susan Estrich’s poignant opinion piece in Sunday’s Columbian (“What is wrong with Trump Defenders?,” Aug. 28) reminds us that millions in this country continue to support the former president no matter what.
These “Trumpers,” and there are many who hold congressional seats, still view him as a victim, not a perpetrator. Voters in Wyoming are perhaps indicative of these “Trumpers”; they overwhelmingly supported the Trump-endorsed Harriet Hageman who trumpeted the “Big Lie,” that the 2020 election was stolen from their guy. Not only is Liz Cheney not seen as the courageous American heroine that she is, but as a traitor to the people of that state.
Estrich also reminds us that unlike any president before him, Trump thought he had the right to take top-secret documents with him to his Florida golf club. Just imagine the outcry from Ted Cruz, Lindsay Graham, Mitch McConnell and their brethren if President Biden dared do the same.
