100 years ago

To prep for the upcoming season, the Battle Ground High girls basketball team played the school’s alumni team in a practice game on Dec. 2, 1922. Later that week, the squad went head-to-head with Woodland High, although the paper didn’t report the score.

75 years ago

On Dec. 2, 1947, nearly 20 local organizations gathered to give local skier Gretchen Fraser a send-off parade as she headed off to the ’48 Winter Olympics in Switzerland. Fraser went on to win a gold medal in the slalom and a silver in the combined skiing event.

50 years ago

The Columbian’s bowling report noted that Marlys Gagliardi rolled into the top spot for women bowlers at the Tiger Bowl. Gagliardi marked down a 600 three-game set for the Women’s City Travelers.

25 years ago

On Nov. 27, 1997, the Greater St. Helens League volleyball announced it awarded “player of the year” to Prairie High’s Cheyanne Mortek. The senior middle hitter led the Falcons to both league and district titles and finished the season with a fifth-place win at the state tournament.
