Letter: Can no longer support Republicans

By Kenneth Alexander, Camas
Published: December 10, 2022, 6:00am

I want to thank the many Republicans in my congressional district who voted using their conscience in last month’s elections.

However, in the future, I ask that they please consider the following:

Independent voters like me rejected Jaime Herrera Beutler because she often operated without integrity, especially during Trump’s presidency and her last two years in office supporting a prominent shill for Donald Trump named Kevin McCarthy. Please discourage her from running for political office ever again and encourage her to move on from politics and use her skills and experience elsewhere.

Although I identified as a Republican for over 30 years, I can no longer condone a party much less support one that accepts violent insurrection as a means to an end and has now become synonymous with violence and disinformation as a means to achieve its goals.

I hold Democrats accountable for their promises and positions, often disagreeing with stances contrived merely from idealism and emotion, not facts and pragmatism.

I also ask Republicans taking positions arising solely from a political or religious ideology, whether it concerns taxes, national security, gay rights, guns or abortion, to recognize that most smart voters are getting tired of that.

Merry Christmas.
