Griffin Reilly wrote an enlightening piece last week about drag queens at local libraries. It would appear these events are few and far between in Clark County.
I can begin to understand the underlying concerns of parents, grandparents or the public when it comes to harmful acts or materials affecting children. Schoolchildren in some jurisdictions may be exposed to graphic or age-inappropriate material tantamount to pornography.
What I fail to understand is people getting worked up to the point of showing up armed and dressed for a self-styled military/militia confrontation, as pointed out in a recent Columbian editorial.
There was a mob of people at a local hospital about 22 months ago that responded to a group “all hands on deck” alarm about an elderly lady being held against her will. It was a false alarm that resulted in a tense confrontation with law enforcement.
Folks, our hardworking docs and nurses don’t deserve or need the added stress. Neither do our library administrators, board members, volunteers and employees. The rule of law and civilized behavior is to be expected, regardless of populist ideology or encouragement.
