Boys basketball highlights: Battle Ground beats Union; Holden scores 54 for RAL

Tait Spencer scored a game-high 33 points, including the final eight points in the game for the Battle Ground Tigers in their 75-67 home victory over Union in Friday’s 4A Greater St. Helens League boys basketball game.

It was the league opener for both teams.

Of Spencer’s 33 points, 10 came in the final quarter, including eight in the final 2 minutes. His bucket with 2 minutes, 10 seconds to go in the game gave the Tigers the lead for good at 69-67.

Union (3-3) never scored after that, but Spencer scored six more.

Two other Tigers — Noah Currie and Trey Spencer — also finished in double figures with 17 and 14 points, respectively. The Tigers (4-1) were a perfect 15 of 15 at the free-throw line.

Yanni Fassilis led Union with 24 points.

R.A. LONG 81, RIDGEFIELD 48 — Cavin Holden put on a show for the Lumberjacks, scoring a school record 54 points to help R.A. Long earn the 2A GSHL victory.

By halftime, Holden had 28 points as RAL led 46-18. For the game, Holden hit 10 3-pointers, eight 2-point field goals and went 9 of 10 at the free-throw line. The 54 points is a single-game best in boys or girls basketball so far this 2022-23 season.

As a team, RAL hit 14 3-pointers.

COLUMBIA RIVER 61, WASHOUGAL 60 — Adam Reeter’s free throw with 2.9 seconds to play gave the Rapids their first lead of the game, leading to River’s league win on the road.

Washougal led by as many as 12 at 45-33 in the third quarter before River mounted a comeback in what first-year Rapids coach Travis Drake called a “crazy game.”

Miles Fitzwilson, Aaron Hoey and Ari Richardson each had 10 points to lead River.

WOODLAND 88, HOCKINSON 56 — The Beavers jumped out to a 34-16 lead the first eight minutes of the game and never looked back in their 2A GSHL road victory over the Hawks.

Dane Huddleston’s game-high 25 points paced Woodland as one of four Beavers in double figures. Justin Philpot had 14, and Beau Swett and Sam Jeschke had 13 apiece.

Logan Wall led the Hawks with 12 points.

MARK MORRIS 86, FORT VANCOUVER 47 — Kobe Parlin and Braydon Olson combined for 46 of the Monarchs’ 86 points in their 2A GSHL home victory over the Trappers.

The Monarchs held a 51-25 lead at halftime. Kaeleb Cvitkovich led Fort with 12 points and Aron Melendez added 10.

KING’S WAY CHRISTIAN 42, EVERGREEN 37 — Giovanny Evanson had a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds plus three assists as the Knights (2-4) topped visiting Evergreen (1-6) in a non-league matchup.

Jaydon Hall also scored 12 points for King’s Way.

Dez Daniel led the Plainsmen with 17 points, and Fox Crader had nine rebounds.

COLUMBIA-WHITE SALMON 54, HUDSON’S BAY 45 — Mason Hamilton scored a game-high 20 points as the Bruins (3-1) handed visting Hudson’s Bay its sixth straight loss.

Dylan Nortz added 13 points for Columbia.

Anthony Garces-Armstrong led Hudson’s Bay in scoring with 13 points, and Jaxen Appelt had 11 points.

STEVENSON 61, LYLE 26 — The Bulldogs held Lyle scoreless in the third quarter and won the non-league game on the road.

All 11 players scored for Stevenson with Kacen Bach leading the way with 11 points. Jordan Waymire had eight points, five rebounds and five steals.
