Niah Cassidy, Grace Strong lead Union girls to sub-regional title

Washougal boys take 2A sub-regional title

Niah Cassidy and Grace Strong wrestled to sub-regional titles to lead Union to a team victory over Kelso at the District 4 girls wrestling sub-regional Saturday at Ridgefield High School.

Cassidy won the 120-pound division and Strong took the title at 145 points to lead the Titans to 112 team points, ten points ahead of second-place Kelso. Kelso got wins from Elle Freund (105) and Alexia Jimenez (190).

Ridgefield had three sub-regional champions in Uruwa Abe (110), Tyla Engstrom (115) and Hannah Fisher (130).

Other division winners were Leah Wallway of La Center (100), Kennedy Wilcox of Prairie (125), Elizabeth Messman of Mountain View (135), Madelyn Mazemke of Camas (140), Taliya Keplar of Evergreen (155), Lacey Klopman of Washougal (170) and Jaelyn Sayler of Skyview (235).

Washougal tops 2A sub-districts

Washougal crowned five sub-district champions, propelling the Panthers to the team title at the 2A sub-district tournament at Hockinson.

The Panthers dominated the lower weight classes, winning at 106 (Brody Davis), 113 (Caleb Davis) and 120 (Luke Golphenee). Washougal also got wins from William Cooper at 170, and Henry Jones at 220.

Washougal will host the regional tournament next Saturday.

The Panthers beat out Columbia River 277-255.5 for the team title. River got wins from Tennyson Kurtz (138), Adam Deeney (145), Caden Porter (152), Gage Newman (160) and Christian Barragan (182).

Other sub-district titles went to Woodland’s Mason Rickard (126), Hockinson’s Ethan Hsu and Cody Wheeler (195) and Tony Balderas (285) of Hudson’s Bay.
