Letter: Science easy to understand

The science says different masks are more effective than others. Yet Christine Nulph interprets that as an excuse to eliminate mask mandates in schools (“Suspend mask mandates,” Our Readers’ Views, Feb. 5). The CDC states that N95 or KN95 masks lower your chance of testing positive for COVID-19 by 83 percent. Other masks, including cloth, vary by design, fit, material, single- or double-layer and filters inside or not. All can make a difference in effectiveness against COVID-19.

Wearing no mask provides zero protection. The best way to reduce infections in public places, including schools, is to require people to wear masks and social distance as much as possible. That science is easy to understand.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
