Prep highlights: Top-seeded Kalama holds off Coupeville for regional win

Chinooks advance to Class 2B quarterfinals

BATTLE GROUND — Kalama survived a late fourth-quarter rally by Coupeville to earn a 59-54 victory Friday in a 2B boys basketball regional game at Battle Ground High School.

The win sends the top-seeded Chinooks to the 2B state quarterfinals at 5:30 p.m. next Thursday at Spokane Arena.

Kalama had a 10-point lead with 2:11 left in the game before steals and 3-point shooting by Coupeville pulled the Wolves within 57-54 with 33.8 seconds to play. The Wolves never got closer the rest of the way.

Kalama used a 15-0 run the final 3:48 of the first half to take the lead for good. Jackson Esary, the 2B Central MVP, led Kalama with 23 points. Max Cox added 13, including 11 in the second half.

Class 3A Girls

ARLINGTON 76, KELSO 45 — The No. 3-seeded Eagles streaked to a 45-23 halftime lead at Everett Community College to clinch a berth in the quarerfinals.

No. 6-seeded Kelso will play a loser-out game Wednesday in Tacoma against top-seeded Mead or No. 8 Lincoln.
