Letter: Better future for all citizens

First, I admit that I don’t always read Roy Schimelpfenig’s opinions (The Columbian, Feb. 17), because I usually know what to expect. I can admire his dogged determination, but I very much dislike his use of propaganda words and labels he applies to people he disagrees with. His idea that one political party has all the answers and can solve all the problems of our nation is wrong. This idea has never proven true in history, and I seriously doubt this will ever be true in our future.

The party he supports takes its name from the republic that it no longer appears to believe in and is heading toward fanatical authoritarianism and violence. It is no longer recognizable as a party of conservative principles or values that I used to admire but not always agree with.

He mentions the future. I may be naïve in thinking it is not too late to change our political discussions to one of civility, debate and reason, where good ideas and good government create a better future for all the citizens of our country. It is my hope there are others who believe the same.
