Letter: Help homeless with ID program

By Ron Rasmussen, Vancouver
Published: February 27, 2022, 6:00am

Please ask your Washington legislators to support Senate Bill 5815. This will make the Washington state ID card free for the homeless. This will make it easier for homeless youth, homeless veterans and homeless adults to restart their productive lives as they apply for bank accounts, housing, education, drug and alcohol counseling, and jobs.

It costs the taxpayers about $44,000 per year to keep someone homeless, in terms of recycling homeless people through law enforcement, hospital emergency rooms and food programs. With this legislation, we can reduce the cost to the taxpayers, and transform many homeless people from tax consumers to tax producers.

This bill has already passed the Washington Senate unanimously, indicating broad bipartisan support. Please support this bill. Thank you.
