Weather Eye: A boring week for weather watchers, storm chasers

Whew, what weather we had last week. Fortunately, here in Clark County, we were only brushed by the icy cold, heavy rains and flooding. Sure, we had some impacts, but nothing like the rest of the Evergreen State.

The upcoming week looks mundane compared to last week and will give residents an opportunity to clean up debris as waters recede and the weather calms down. We’ll have mostly dry weather locally the next several days, with only a 40 percent or 50 percent chance of light showers.

Today we’ll get some easterly winds, which will help dry things out, and clear skies. This week’s temperatures will range from highs of 45 to 50 degrees to lows mostly above freezing. It will be boring for weather watchers and storm chasers.

But it’s a great opportunity to clean up the yard and remove holiday decorations or get outside after being cooped up. Go for a walk or a long jog in the park. Our dogs may like to head outdoors for a jaunt as well.

So, I am asked, will there be any cold and snow in our future? We are, of course, still early in the winter season, and there is plenty of cold air to our far north, but at least through mid-January, nothing is heading our way. Things look seasonal or a little warmer for the next 10 days at least.

Quite often, February brings us plenty of cold and snow. We may have to wait a bit longer if you haven’t had your fill of winter yet.

Meanwhile, head to the mountains, where there is a ton of snow to play in. I chuckle seeing pictures of skiers on the chairlifts at Mount Hood riding uphill only a few feet from the deep snow below them. Amazing. But we didn’t get too much rain in the higher mountains, and what rain fell compacted the snow. Then another fresh foot or so on top of that freshened things up.

In the lowlands, though, there is plenty of property damage. It will take a while to restore the landscape back to where it was.

We’ll chat on Tuesday and review some local rainfall amounts from last month.
