A trespasser on a sign over Interstate 5 forced the freeway’s closure through downtown Vancouver late Thursday.

The incident began about 9:30 p.m. when a man was spotted climbing onto a sign that hangs from the Evergreen Boulevard overpass above the freeway. It took three hours to resolve the incident and reopen the freeway.

The freeway was closed in both directions. Southbound, traffic was detoured at Mill Plain Boulevard. Northbound traffic was also forced to exit the freeway.

The Vancouver Fire Department brought a ladder truck to the scene to reach the man.

No further information was available early Friday.
