The redistricting lawsuit filed this month did not muck up the redistricting process (“In Our View: Voters deserve better redistricting process,” The Columbian, Jan. 23). Rather, in one day, it cleaned up the muck and led to the county council sending the matter back to the redistricting committee to do its work according to the county charter.
The committee’s task was to use the 2020 Census to define five council districts approved by the voters in November. On Jan. 20, the committee’s redistricting master correctly followed the charter by selecting a redistricting plan that was designated as the B2 map. In accordance with the charter, a public hearing will be held at 6 p.m. Feb. 7.
One week later, the redistricting committee will meet. Any changes must be approved by a two-thirds majority (four votes). If not, the B2 map will be forwarded to the Clark County Council. Per the charter, the council can only change this map by 2 percent with the agreement of two-thirds majority (four votes).
