Letter: Fans want to see top athletes

By George Gadbury, Vancouver

“Australia won’t miss you, Novak” was the haranguing commentary by Froma Harrop (The Columbian, Jan. 22). I respectfully disagree. The Australian Open will miss Novak Djokovic. He’s the No. 1 player and the defending champion. As a fan of sports, I want to see Tiger at Augusta, Aaron Rodgers in the NFL playoffs, or Stephen Curry perform for the Golden State Warriors.

Because of TV ratings, advertising dollars, product endorsements, apparel sales, and jobs created, these athletes are the most successful entertainers in the world. Ms. Harrop is obviously jealous of our athletic stars. However, she can always turn the channel and watch “Empire” reruns.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
