Letter: Ban fireworks in Clark County

I agree with Ted Hallock of Battle Ground: ban fireworks in all of Clark County. Use is excessive and abused with no consequences for those who have no self-control and can’t wait until the Fourth. A ban was planned for the end of 2021, but repealed arbitrarily by county council members, who now throw up their hands and say it’s not a priority for the community.

Residents should not have to deal with the constant noise a week prior to the holiday and beyond. What people can’t get, they can’t use. Enforcement is impossible, so take away the ability to buy them. You can’t ban them in some places and not the entire county — that’s like having a smoking/non-smoking section in a closed room and telling the nonsmokers “don’t mind the smoke.” One person setting off fireworks in a neighborhood disturbs the whole neighborhood.

Fireworks are not a right, they are dangerous and unhealthy for the environment — smoke, noise, trauma for animals and people. What about my right to peaceful enjoyment of my home? Pressure your Clark County council members to ban them — if it was on the table once, then they once deemed it necessary. What changed?
