In looking back at past “Check It Out” columns written in July, I discovered a theme: food. Maybe it’s because summertime gifts us with a bounty of delicious fresh veggies and fruits just begging to be cooked and eaten. In other words, summer is yummy.

So, I’ve decided to keep the foodie motif rolling for yet another July by recommending some recently published cookbooks. Are you like me, someone who enjoys reading cookbooks but has little desire in transitioning from reading to cooking? Well, that’s just all right, fellow cookbook-readers-but-not-cookers. But wait, you check out cookbooks because you actually enjoy cooking? Again, that’s just all right, cookbook-readers-who-love-to-cook. Basically, this week’s reading list is a perfect match for all cooks and noncooks, so that’s a win-win.

Read on, cook on!

  • “Gullah Geechee Home Cooking: Recipes from the Matriarch of Edisto Island” by Emily Meggett.
  • “I Dream of Dinner (So You Don’t Have To): Low-Effort, High-Reward Recipes” by Ali Slagle.
