This week’s reading recommendations might not sound super exciting, but hey, sometimes life requires planning. I know this because this year forced a variety of hard situations my way that required practicality over excitement. This is what it means to be a human. I know this. Sigh.

If the universe is trying to teach me a lesson in 2022, it’s all about wills, trusts and estate planning. While I haven’t been directly involved with estate planning (yet), the passing of several family members has made me acutely aware of how important it is to have something in place for loved ones when the bucket has been kicked, so to speak.

First and foremost, I recommend communicating with experts in these fields. But it doesn’t hurt to gather some knowledge on your own because knowledge is power, and knowledge is powerful. Hence, a column that highlights books about wills, trusts and estate planning.

Life is short, no doubt. So, may I suggest using the library’s collection to ease doubt about the final out.

  • “Checklist for My Family: A Guide to My History, Financial Plans, and Final Wishes” by Sally Balch Hurme.
  • “Estate Planning 101: From Avoiding Probate and Assessing Assets to Establishing Directives and Understanding Taxes, Your Essential Primer to Estate Planning” by Vicki Cook and Amy Blacklock.
  • “Estate Planning Basics” by Denis Clifford.
  • “Get It Together: Organize Your Records So Your Family Won’t Have To” by Melanie Cullen and Shae Irving.
  • “What Matters Most: The Get Your S**t Together Guide to Wills, Money, Insurance, and Life’s ‘What-ifs’” by Chanel Reynolds.
  • “Wills and Trusts Kit” by Aaron Larson.
