Letter: Nothing sporting about AR-15

I just read a letter to the editor from an apparent gun owner regarding the AR-15 who wrote, “these lightweight modern sporting rifles may look intimidating but they are just the natural evolution of gun technology replacing heavy, bolt-action, wood-stocked rifles of the past” (“AR-15 is natural evolution,” Our Readers’ Views, June 15).

These are magazine-fed, semi-automatic rifles. So owners of these rifles find it “sporting” to use them when hunting? Where’s the sport in using rapid-fire weapons when hunting? And now these rifles with “folding stocks … for easier storage” are being used to kill innocent men, women and children. Will this gun owner change his thinking when his own child, grandchild or relative is a victim of this “sporting” rifle? I hope it doesn’t come to that, for his sake.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
