Letter: Gun ownership is a privilege

In his Wednesday letter to the editor, Mr. Ault writes a very interesting and informative letter about the design of the AR-15 rifle (“AR-15 is natural evolution,” Our Readers’ Views, June 15). It is so comforting to know that the AR-15 pistol grip is comfortable and that the barrel is protected with a perforated shield to prevent the shooter’s hand from being burned while he is killing children or people that he hates.

The problem we have is that if the gun is in the hands of a responsible person, the gun will not be used to kill people. If it is in the hands of a psychopath or sociopath it could be used to kill people.

Why is it so difficult for law-abiding gun owners to agree that gun ownership is a privilege just like driving a car and as a privilege, it should come with some reasonable restrictions to prevent ownership by a person who will not or may not use it for lawful purposes?

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
