Letter: Democrats need to come together

The trouble with Democrats, liberals and progressives is we believe in the principles of democracy. And we do not have an egomaniac spokesperson stirring us to storm the halls of government, intimidate public officials and lie to keep in his favor, or a cadre of wealthy in the background stirring the pot to keep this minority worked up, angry and believing the lies.

We foolishly believe in the United State Constitution and the Bill of Rights. We believe in individual rights to practice the religion of their choice, in the separation of church and state, in a strong economy, even capitalism, as long as workers are treated fairly, paid a living wage. We believe a person’s actions determine their worth in the community, not their sexual identity, race, creed, the color of their skin or their economic status, that the economy should support the individual’s basic needs. Many of us even own guns for hunting, killing rats in our barn, or for target practice.

Are we not angry enough, frightened enough to come together as the majority we are as one voice, a voice louder than rioters, the liars and bigots? A question I ask myself every day.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
